Thematic Placemaking

For the Hale Family Clinical Building at Boston Children’s Hospital, I worked alongside a talented team of designers, fabricators, and project partners to create an interactive experiential graphic program designed to bring a sense of wonder, comfort, and discovery to the patient journey. Inspired by the layered, tactile nature of children’s pop-up books, the concept followed a micro-to-macro progression through different scales of the natural world, moving from sand to sky while weaving in familiar references to Boston and New England along the way. Layered graphics, dimensional forms, movement, and regional storytelling brought each theme to life and created moments of interaction throughout the building. The result is a series of playful, tactile experiences that feel imaginative, rooted in place, and intentionally designed to spark curiosity, connection, and joy for patients and their families.
